Camogie Club Notes

Derry League

The Derry league re fixture against Eoghan Rua, Coleraine took place in Pair Cormac on Sunday evening. Having yet to get a win over the Coleraine side, the seniors were keen to change the record, especially in their home pitch and debuting their new jerseys.

Down a goal at half time, it seemed like Coleraine were getting the better of Eglish once again but the girls dug deep and at the final whistle were delighted winning 3.07 to 0.13, Brenda Burke, Susan McCann and Ciara Donnelly all finding the net!

Tyrone League

Last Wednesday was the beginning of the Tyrone league campaign for the senior girls away to Eire Og, Carrickmore. This was a great opportunity for some of the younger girls to make their senior debut, all of which made a great impact. The club sends its best wishes to Niamh McNulty who unfortunately got injured during the game. We hope you make a super speedy recovery Niamh!

This week, we have a double fixture of league games, with Dungannon on Wednesday evening at 6.45pm and Derrylaughan on Friday at 7.30pm. Both games are in Pairc Cormac.

Feile

On Friday afternoon, our U14 camogs welcomed Na Brid Oga of Co. Mayo to Eglish for the weekend and shortly after arrival both teams headed to Pairc Cormac for their first game, the Mayo side proving too strong for the Eglish girls.

In Clonduff on Saturday morning, Eglish played a very strong Clonkill side from Westmeath. The girls in black and green battled hard but Clonkill finished easy winners. Next up was Clonduff v Eglish which was a much tighter affair! Having learnt from the previous games, the girls played and fought much harder but lost narrowly by 4points.

This left the girls in the shield section of the division and it was back on the bus and off to Tullysaran for the quarter final stages were they met Antrim side, Ahoghill. After having lost 3 games in a row, the Eglish girls were eager for a win and this was evident immediately from the initial throw in. Each and every girl on the pitch battled ferociously and got the 4point win they deserved at the full time whistle.

Sunday morning, it was back on the bus and off to Derrylaughan were Eglish played Kilrea in the semi-final of the shield. Again the Eglish side were determined from the throw in and won 5.03 to 0.01! Against all odds, Eglish found themselves in the final and it was off again to Garvaghy.

However, the girls were under no illusion that the final would be easy. They played De La Salle from Waterford, a county renowned for its hurling tradition. At half time Eglish had kept the Waterford side to within a goal, 2.02 to 0.02, but in the second half the De LaSalle girls proved too strong and it was not to be Eglish’s day.

The Club is extremely proud of this team; coming back to Eglish with runners up All Ireland medals is a terrific achievement!

We would also like to sincerely thank all the parents, families and friends who helped out so much over the weekend. To everyone who cooked, cleaned, hosted the Mayo team, coordinated the entertainment and supported the girls all weekend long, we are entirely grateful and Feile 2014 would not have been a success without you all, thank you.
