Camogie Club Notes

All Ireland Champions

Everyone at the Club would like to congratulate our All Ireland winning 7’s teams who won the Shield section in the Killmacud 7’s tournament at the weekend.

The winning team was; Kelley Fay, Brenda Horsfield, Ciara McGready, Siobhan Hughes, Julie Lagan, Susan Conlon, Aisling and Ciara Donnelly and Maria and Shauna Jordan. Congratulations to everyone, each player also finding themselves on the score sheet by the end of the day! (Even Kelley!)

In their section the Eglish girls met teams from strong camogie counties Clare, Wexford and Galway but won all their games convincingly leaving their confidence high as they qualified for the quarter final stages.

The quarter final was against O’Moores from Laois and it was only in the second half that Eglish managed to pull away showing their greater strength and fitness in the end. (Also a little attempt at bending the rules from a certain “player of the decade”, when she decided to throw the ball up and catch it again!)

Eglish played Oranmore of Galway in the semifinal and this proved to be the hardest of all their games. A very slow start for the girls in green and black saw them trailing by 9 points at one stage, the whole team struggling to find their momentum. However the girls continued to battle and bit by bit chipped away the big lead with some crucial points. With two minutes left on the clock, Eglish found themselves down by two when Oranmore broke through the middle and were through on goal. It seemed certain that Eglish would be exiting the tournament only for a super interception by Kelley fay and a long strike up the pitch that found Ciara Donnelly who had only one thing on her mind, Goal! And sure enough she scored a screamer just as the ref blew for full time leaving the Oranmore girls heart broken and Eglish advanced to the final!

The final was against Galtier of Waterford. Another tight game where the Eglish girls found themselves behind at an early stage. However, the experience the girls had gained from the previous matches was evident as Eglish quickly settled and lead by 3 at half time. Eglish maintained their lead for the rest of the match with excellent scores from Ciara Donnelly, Susan and Shauna and were deserved winners at the final whistle. Final score 3.07 to 4.03.

Thanks to the management duo of Jim and Barry who from the sideline, hit and caught every ball with the girls and deserved the win as much as the players. Thanks also to Leona, Lisa Marie and Niamh who were on the line also assisting the players throughout the day. We also would like to thank our excellent time keeper Debbie who ensured the ref knew exactly when he should be blowing his whistle and “gently” reminding him when he had played 1min 15secs too long!!

Finally, a huge thanks to Ballymacnab who cheered for us right through, the support was brilliant!

It goes without saying that the celebrations continued long into Saturday night/Sunday morning with Lisa Marie leading the main ringleader!

Well done again girls, the Club is immensely proud of your terrific achievement.

(Special thanks to guest PRO Kelley Fay for the Killmacud update!)

Congratulations

Congratulations to our joint captain Julie Lagan who was honored with the award of “Player of the Decade”, a much deserved accolade. Julie was presented with this award on Sunday during the Camogie All Ireland Finals in Croke Park.

Also, belated congratulations to another young Eglish Camog and future star who also had her day out in Croke Park. Regan Fay was selected to play for the Kilkenny team during the All Ireland hurling semi-final between Limerick and Kilkenny. Let’s hope this is the first of many occasions playing in Croke Park!

Best Wishes

The Club would like to extend their best wishes to Catherine Muldoon and Regan Fay on their recent broken bone injuries! We hope both your recoveries are coming along fast!

The Big Cycle

Eglish Camogie Club along with Roan Primary School is hosting a big cycle on Sunday 28th September. There will also be smaller cycles for primary school children and one for post primary – 18. We would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the actual cycle and to spread the word. Further details can be found on Facebook.
