In terms of Primary Schools tournaments The Cabragh Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated and keenly contested competitions on the calendar. Once again there was a large turnout for the event with 9 schools taking part in this year’s tournament which was held at Kennedy Park home of Killeeshil GFC. The schools participating were St, Mary’s P.S. Cabragh, St Joseph’s Galbally, Roan P.S., St Patrick’s P.S. Aughadarragh, Derrylatinee P.S., Edendork P.S., St Patrick’s P.S. Donaghmore, St Malachy’s P.S. Glencull and St Mary’s P.S. Ballygawley.
After some keenly contested group games, Galbally, Aughadarragh, Roan and Cabragh made it through to the Cabragh Cup semi-finals. In the semi finals Galbally managed to overcome a valiant effort by Aughadarragh while Cabragh were defeated by a well organised Roan team in the dying minutes of the game. This meant that the 2011 final would be a repeat of last year’s final as 2010 champions Roan, led by Mr Seamus Mc Creesh, took on Mr Sean Quinn’s Galbally boys. In what was a great game of Gaelic Football that saw some superb play from both sides, Galbally held out for a narrow three point victory which was due in no small measure to some remarkable saves from their goalkeeper.
Also this year for the first time, the Cabragh Shield was up for grabs. Ballygawley and Derrylatinee were knocked out in the semi-finals leaving Donaghmore and Edendork to compete in this final. Donaghmore ran out eventual winners thanks to some terrific individual performances from Mr Eddie Doris’s side.
Cabragh principal, Mr Damian Kelly, congratulated all the teams that took part today and said he looked forward to meeting them again in future tournaments over the next couple of weeks.
