The opening ceremony for Páirc Chormaic was the highlight of the weekend and thankfully we had the glorious sunshine to help us celebrate. A large crowd had gathered at the main grounds for the start of the parade, led by the famous Artane Band. It was great to have such a talented and respected band in our small parish, and they were assisted well by the Brantry Pipe Band.
The sight and sounds of the Artane Band was great and the large gathering followed proudly behind as they led the way to the new Páirc Chormaic pitch. Every vantage point was taken and we even had onlookers from a helicopter above!
When everyone arrived at Páirc Chormaic the various guests spoke to the crowd of their appreciation and acknowledgement of what has been achieved with the development of Páirc Chormaic. Committee members Ruairí Martin and Canice Murtagh welcomed everyone and introduced all the invited guests on the platform. Aoghan O Fearghail (Ulster GAA President), Ciaran Mc Laughlin (Tyrone GAA Chairman), Brid McGilligan (Ulster Camogie Secretary), Pat Darcy (Tyrone Camogie Chairman), Fr. Peter McAnenly (Eglish PP), Kieran Hagan (Eglish St. Patrick’s Chairman) and Donal Mc Anallen all relayed their own individual thoughts and acknowledgements. Kieran Hagan gave an insight into the fundraising and the great voluntary ethos that exists within the GAA community in Eglish, as people have freely given their time, talents and expertise in many various forms, at no cost, to enhance the current standing and development of Cumann Naomh Pádraig, An Eaglais. Following the speeches the new plaques and stone were unveiled at the entrance to the grounds.
Although the new Páirc Chormaic is not located beside the main grounds at Fr. Connolly Park, it was fitting that a small piece of sod was cut and exchanged between the two grounds, to symbolise that both grounds are connected closely. This was carried out by long serving committee member Sean Donaghy. The final act to complete the official opening was the raising of the tricolour, and this was carried out by Kieran Hagan (football club chairman) and Ciara Kerr (camogie club chairperson).
It was great to see so many young and old come out to support the club on what was a momentous day in the history of the whole parish. The new playing grounds will be a lasting monument to commemorate the life of Cormac McAnallen.
