Camogie Club Notes

Senior

Well done to the girls who travelled to Dublin on Saturday morning for the All Ireland Kilmacud 7’s tournament. In near perfect conditions, the girls first played old rivals Keady and after a tough battle came away victorious at the final whistle. Next up in their section was Laragh from Cavan. This game started at a blistering pace and remained at this intensity throughout, but strong finishing from Cathy and Shauna Jordan lead the Eglish side to a two point win. The third game was against Derry side Kilrea, Aishling and Maria Jordan both proving influential around midfield and Niamh McNulty upfront all getting their names on the score sheet resulting in Eglish remaining unbeaten after their first three games. Finally, the girls were to play the host team, Kilmacud Crokes. In a must win game, Eglish looked determined and points from Kelley Fay, who got a rare chance out of nets, settled the team into a lead at the half way mark. Solid performances from Siobhan Hughes and Brenda Horsfield in defense gave the team the win they deserved and a ticket straight through to the semifinal.

Going into the semifinal the girls were under no illusions and realised that they would have it all to do against a strong Clare team. Eglish pounced from the throw in and Niamh and Shauna combined brilliantly to break through and extremely strong Scariff defense. At the other end Kelley Fay pulled off an excellent diving save to leave Eglish in the lead by a goal at half time. The second half started at an intense pace and Scariff were first to get on the score sheet with 2 goals and a point unanswered. Great fielding from Meabh McGleenan and pass to Maria brought Eglish right back into it. However at the final whistle, Eglish were unluckily beaten by 4points and the Clare team then went on to win the final.

Meanwhile this week the seniors are due to play Clan Eireann in the Tyrone league on Wednesday night at 7pm in Derrylaughan.

Training will continue on Friday night at 6pm.

U18

Congratulations to the minors after a superb team performance on Friday night which saw them defeat Dungannon and win the Championship. Right through the team there were fantastic displays of camogie. From Bronagh McMullan in nets, Shelly McVeigh in full back who pulled off some fantastic blocks. Aisling Donnelly controlled the whole half back area and came out the stronger in numerous hard hitting tackles. Meabh McGleenan and Niamh McNulty worked meticulously together in midfield both aiding attacks and helping out in defense. Niamh McVeigh’s sharp shooting serving to put a gap in the score line and scores from Leanne Donnelly and Alanna Muldoon lead the Eglish side to victory at the final whistle. Special congratulations to Niamh McNulty who was deservedly presented with the player of the match award. Well done again to all the players and management, securing both Championship and League titles. This talented minor squad certainly bodes well for the future of the Eglish senior team.

U16

The U16s have a busy week ahead this week with a league fixture and the championship final. On Tuesday, the girls play Fr. Shields in Eglish at 6.30pm and on Friday evening they play Edendork in the final at 6pm, venue is still to be confirmed. This is sure to be an exciting final as Edendork beat Eglish in the league earlier this year and the girls will have it all to do. Good luck to players and management in both games. Please come and support the girls in what will be a nail-biting match.

On Thursday, there will be a light training session for the team from 6pm – 7pm.
